AISI 316 stainless steel pipe is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel pipe specifically designed for corrosion-resistant applications. The addition of molybdenum to 316 pipe gives it better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion than 304 stainless steel, making it widely used in chemical, water treatment, and marine environments. Its equivalent grades include UNS S31600 and EN 1.4401.

It exhibits better corrosion resistance than 304 in humid, mildly corrosive, and chlorine-containing environments.
Honking the inner bore helps improve sealing performance, stabilize piston movement, and reduce the wear sensitivity of hydraulic cylinders. Surface finish is a key factor in seal quality.
It has good machinability, strong formability and weldability, and can be used for precision tubing and mechanical assembly. In cases where welding-related intergranular corrosion is a significant concern, 316L stainless steel can be selected.

Yes, it will. Therefore, the cylinder body emphasizes precision-honed inner surfaces and strict dimensional consistency. Parker points out that good surface finish is crucial for sealing performance.
2. Q: Is standard 316 stainless steel sufficient for corrosive hydraulic environments?
316 stainless steel is usable only in environments with water and low chloride content, as its molybdenum content improves resistance to pitting corrosion, superior to 304 stainless steel. However, 316 stainless steel is not entirely immune to strong chloride or chloride stress corrosion cracking, especially in high-temperature or creviced environments. For welded components or more demanding applications, 316L, 316LN, or higher alloy stainless steels should be considered.
3. Q: Does this tubing conform to internationally recognized standards?
Yes. ASTM A511/A511M is a commonly used standard for seamless stainless steel tubing for machinery. For pressure- and corrosion-resistant seamless tubes, EN 10216-5, JIS G3459, GB/T 14976, and GOST 9941 are widely applicable standards.
